Leading Economic Indicator (LEI) - the behavior of indicators that consistently move upward or downward before the actual expansion or contraction of overall economic activity.  The system is based on an empirical observation that the cycles of many economic data series are related to the cycles of total business activity.

in the first quarter of 2013

The composite leading economic indicator (LEI) slightly inched up in Q1 2013 posting a negative 0.008 from a revised negative 0.013 in the fourth quarter of 2012.  After four consecutive quarters of decline in 2012, the composite index regained in Q1 2013 but remained in the negative territory in the last two quarters.
